With Azure Backup service the benefits keep adding up, right from data security to centralized monitoring and management. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Azure Backup service uses the MARS agent to back up files, folders, and system state from on-premises machines and Azure VMs. The backups are stored in a Recovery Services vault. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, we will look at how to back up on-premise files and folders using Microsoft Azure Recovery Services (MARS) agent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>There are two ways to run the MARS agent:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Directly on on-premises Windows machines. <\/li><li>On Azure VMs that run Windows side by side with the Azure VM backup extension. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"525\" height=\"543\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cloudiqtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ba_1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24246\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is the step by step process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id='create-a-recovery-services-vault'  id=\"boomdevs_1\" >Create a Recovery Services vault<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Sign in to the <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.azure.com\/\">Azure portal<\/a>.<br>2. On the&nbsp;Recovery Services vaults&nbsp;dashboard, select&nbsp;&#8220;Add&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"512\" height=\"210\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cloudiqtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ba_2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24247\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>3. The&nbsp;Recovery Services vault&nbsp;dialog box opens. Provide values of the&nbsp;Name,&nbsp;Subscription,&nbsp;Resource group, and&nbsp;Location.<br>4. Select &#8220;Create&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"477\" height=\"316\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cloudiqtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ba_3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24248\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 id='download-the-mars-agent'  id=\"boomdevs_2\" >Download the MARS agent<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Download the MARS agent so that you can install it on the machines that you want to back up.<br>2. In the vault, select&nbsp;&#8220;Backup&#8221;.<br>3. Select&nbsp;On-premises for \u201cWhere is your workload running?\u201d<br>4. Select&nbsp;Files and folders for \u201cWhat do you want to back up?\u201d<br>5. Select&nbsp;&#8220;Prepare Infrastructure&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"922\" height=\"462\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cloudiqtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ba_4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cloudiqtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ba_4.png 922w, https:\/\/www.cloudiqtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ba_4-768x385.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 922px) 100vw, 922px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>5. For&nbsp;\u201cPrepare infrastructure\u201d, under&nbsp;Install Recovery Services agent, download the MARS agent.<br>6. Select &#8220;Already downloaded or using the latest Recovery Services Agent&#8221;, and then download the vault credentials.<br>7. Select&nbsp;&#8220;Save&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1429\" height=\"802\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cloudiqtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ba_5.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cloudiqtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ba_5.png 1429w, https:\/\/www.cloudiqtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ba_5-768x431.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1429px) 100vw, 1429px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 id='install-and-register-the-agent'  id=\"boomdevs_3\" >Install and register the agent <\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Run the MARSagentinstaller.exe file on the VM.<br>2. In the &#8220;MARS Agent Setup Wizard&#8221;, select&nbsp;&#8220;Installation Settings&#8221;. <br>3. Choose where to install the agent and choose a location for the cache. Select&nbsp;&#8220;Next&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The cache is for storing data snapshots before sending them to recovery services vault.<\/li><li>The cache location should have free space equal to at least 5 percent of the size of the data you&#8217;ll back up.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>4. For&nbsp;Proxy Configuration, specify how the agent that runs on the Windows machine will connect to the internet. Then select&nbsp;&#8220;Next&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"460\" height=\"370\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cloudiqtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ba_6.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24251\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>5. For&nbsp;Installation, review, and select&nbsp;&#8220;Install&#8221;.<br>6. After the agent is installed, select&nbsp;&#8220;Proceed to Registration&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"589\" height=\"445\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cloudiqtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ba_7.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24252\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>7. In&nbsp;Register Server Wizard&nbsp;&gt;&nbsp;Vault Identification, browse to and select the credentials file. Then select&nbsp;&#8220;Next&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"381\" height=\"287\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cloudiqtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ba_8.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24253\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>8. On the&nbsp;&#8220;Encryption Setting&#8221;&nbsp;page, specify a passphrase(<strong>user-defined<\/strong>) which is used to encrypt and decrypt backups for the machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"443\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cloudiqtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ba_9.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24254\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>9. Save the passphrase in a secure location. It is needed while restoring a backup.<br>10. Open the MARS agent console.<br>2. Under&nbsp;&#8220;Actions&#8221;, select&nbsp;&#8220;Schedule Backup&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"414\" height=\"345\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cloudiqtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ba_12.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24257\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>3. In the &#8220;Schedule Backup Wizard&#8221;, select&nbsp;&#8220;Getting started&#8221; and&nbsp;click&nbsp;&#8220;Next&#8221;.<br>4. Under&nbsp;&#8220;Select Items to Back up&#8221;, select&nbsp;&#8220;Add Items&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"466\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cloudiqtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ba_13.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24258\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>5. Select items to back up, and select&nbsp;OK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"449\" height=\"289\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cloudiqtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ba_14.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24259\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>6. On the&nbsp;&#8220;Select Items to Back Up&#8221;&nbsp;page, select&nbsp;&#8220;Next&#8221;.<br>7. Specify when to take daily or weekly backups in the&nbsp;&#8220;Specify Backup Schedule&#8221;&nbsp;page and select&nbsp;&#8220;Next&#8221;.<br>8. It is possible to schedule up to three daily backups per day and can run weekly backups too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"547\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cloudiqtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ba_15.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24260\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>9. On the&nbsp;&#8220;Select Retention Policy&#8221;&nbsp;page, specify how to store copies of your data. And select&nbsp;&#8220;Next&#8221;.<br>10.
